Crooks Must Leave San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 2. -- Chief of Police Jesse B. Cook told the members of the detective department today that every crook in the city must leave immediately. He assembled all the plain clothes men at police headquarters on Eddy street and informed them he would not permit the protection of any criminal by a member of the detective force. Cook directed that all the known pickpockets, porch climbers, highwaymen, and sneak thieves be arrested on sight. Even the "stool pigeons" are to be taken into custody. The chief announced that there would be no removals from the detective force at present.
